I Picked The Price Of This Everlane Dress, Because Radical Transparency Is In

Everlane dress

Radical transparency is not a phrase that you hear very often when it comes to clothing. The true world of fashion is often masked with celebrity faces, high prices, and constantly changing trends. But Everlane is changing the game by being brutally honest with its customer. So much so that I actually picked the price of my little black Everlane dress. That is how transparent the company is.

Picking your own price when it comes to fashion is pretty much unheard of. Typically, you go online, look at the price, and decide if it’s right for you. Everlane has a section of the website that lets you pick instead. The brand gives three different prices and allows you to pick what you pay. You can either choose to get the lowest possible price of the overstocked goods, pay a little extra to pay the team, or pay the highest amount to fund all of that plus future projects. This is something that I have never seen before in a company.

The website reads, “It’s not a sale — it’s better. We choose the products, you choose the price.”

Personally, I love a good sale section. It’s the first section that I go to, whether I’m shopping in store or online. But a sale section that I can actually pick the price of? Sign me up. My Everlane dress was a part of the choose your price sale. The brand fills the section with items that are almost out of style, but that they bought too many of. Hence why I got this spring Everlane dress for less than the usual price.

I love every single thing that this stands for. The Everlane dress and the rest of the brand’s clothing is completely eco-friendly. The brand is also radically transparent about everything from the price to where materials are sourced. It actually gives you a virtual tour of the factory that creates the clothing.

Now let’s get to the part you’ve been waiting for. I know that you’re dying to know what I chose to pay for the dress, right? Believe it or not, I didn’t choose the lowest price.

I chose to pay $49 for the dress.

The lowest I could’ve gone was $46 for the dress. That would make it 40 percent off what the original price was. But I believed that paying the team that worked hard to produce this dress was more important than saving $3. That was a personal choice of mine.

The highest that I could’ve paid for the dress was $56. I decided that that was a little too steep for the little black dress. Plus the extra $10 would have gone to the team to make more products. As great as that sounds, I rather give them credit for the dress that they made instead. But, like I said, that’s my personal choice. This choice isn’t just about the Everlane dress, though.

You have a choice in what you buy and where you money goes with every single purchase.

Everlane’s sale is a great way to see visually what other brands aren’t showing you. When you get a cheap price for a clothing item, it’s likely because someone else isn’t being paid for their work. It’s simply just the truth. The $10 tee that you found at Forever 21 is at someone else’s cost. The only way to bring you cheaper clothing is to cut corners and pay the people who made them less. Personally, those are not my morals and I won’t wear them on my back.

If people looked at the price of an item for paying what it is actually worth, fast fashion would end. Paying more for clothing is important for a few reasons. First of all, people are getting paid for their work. That is what people deserve — bottom line. But it also makes you think about what you wear. You take better care of items that you pay more for. They also end up lasting much longer than fast fashion items.

If you’ve been following along on the website, you’ll know that I’ve decided to inch towards a capsule closet. My choice to go minimal with my wardrobe doesn’t mean that I am done shopping. Oddly enough, I started my minimal wardrobe with an online shopping trip.

I’m a firm believer in the wear what you own method of going minimal. I also want to craft a wardrobe that can transform through the seasons and holds staples that will last me years to come. This Everlane dress is all of that rolled into one. It’s also topped with a little transparent bow.

The goal of building my minimalist wardrobe is to have items that work for multiple seasons. This Everlane dress is more versatile than it looks.

Everlane dressAs soon as I saw this dress, I knew it would be the perfect first piece to my minimal wardrobe. It’s black, so it goes with everything. The Everlane dress also works for casual dressing, business casual, or more formal settings. Not to mention that it’s flattering for my body type. But the main reason that it caught my eye is that it’s versatile. I can throw on a t-shirt under it in the spring or a turtleneck underneath for fall to winter. The Everlane dress looks great with heels, tennis shoes, or boots. Oh, and I can wear tons of different jewelry with it. That, my friends, is everything that I could possibly need in a minimalist item.

I’m using this as inspiration for the rest of my wardrobe. If every item that I purchase from now on can be worn as many ways, in as many seasons as this one, I’ll be extremely happy. Of course, there will be seasonal and new items joining my closet each season. There will just be less of them.

The point isn’t just to get the most bang for my buck. It’s about making the space in my closet mean something — to my style and the planet.

This Everlane dress is something that I can be proud to wear. I feel great it in. It fits beautifully, and I can even get away with not wearing a bra with it. The fabric feels good on my skin. It’s also super versatile. I just can’t say enough great things about the dress or how it was purchased.

The Everlane dress was also perfect for vacation. I packed it in my bag knowing that I could dress it up, wear it over a bathing suit, or just wear it for a day out. It eliminated the need to pack outfits for every single occasion — aka minimal packing.

I ended up wearing it to walk around Baltimore Harbor for the day. The Everlane dress wasn’t too heavy for the super hot day. At the same time, it still gave me all the support that I needed. If you can’t tell by now, I am a huge fan of this dress and the bran in general. I will be buying from the brand again. Because when there’s a brand that puts this much thought into the creating, making, and buying process, it’s worth being celebrated.

xx.

I love and respect Everlane’s ethical mindset so much. I really like how you broke down your reasoning for your pricepoint in this post. Transparancy in companies is exactly what we need!
