When I went to school, there was no Instagram or Facebook. There were flip phones and Friday night football. Mean words didn’t pop up every time you picked up your phone. I’m not saying bullying didn’t happen, because it did, but girl power was higher than it is today. Communication was high, friendships were strong, and times were simpler.
My brother and I are ten years apart. It makes me so sad to hear about the type of bullying that goes on at his school. Girls are badmouthing other girls to the point where some of them are afraid to text back something nice, in fear of it being a joke. What these girls need is a little girl power. I want the simpler times back. While I can’t do it singlehandedly, organizations like Girls Inc. can.
The organization inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through direct service and advocacy, according to their website. Girls Inc. uses advice, mentors, and specific programs to help females navigate their life, including gender and social barriers.
I am all about girl power. If there’s a way to lift another woman up, you can count me in. So when I heard that Madewell x Girls Inc. teamed up for another girl power collab, I knew it was something that I had to share with you. Because it doesn’t get any better than spreading a powerful message and giving back at the same time.
Madewell might be known for their jeans, but their most recent collab is a great one. The brand teamed up with Girls Inc. to come up with a t-shirt, necklace, and earrings that spread the the girl power message. All of the items have a small little female sign on them. Basically, it sticks to Madewell’s moto to embrace the essentials but it gives a little more girl power.
“All day we think about the essentials women need to empower their everyday lives,” Joyce Lee, Madewell head designer, said in a press release. “It’s important to us to support women through the many phases of their life —from adolescence to adulthood — which is why we’re passionate about the Girls Inc. mission and our partnership with the organization.”
Speaking of giving — every single item that you purchase will give a little too. Twenty five percent of proceeds from any of the three items will go towards Girls Inc. to help support females in need. Consider it an instant gift for doing something good.
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite out of this collection. Every single item is simple enough to fit anyone’s style while still making a statement. Out of all three items, the shirt is the perfect staple. You know when you get the perfect white tee, wear it in a few times, and then it becomes your all-time favorite? Well, this one comes already broken in for you.
It’s minimalist with a powerful meaning.
The jewelry is just as great too. You can slip these items on and just keep wearing them throughout the week. There’s no need to match your outfit to the necklace or earrings. You just throw them on and don’t even have to think about it. I’ve actually had the earrings on since I got them.
The only problem with this collection is that it’s only available for a limited time. As of Sept. 25, the entire collection is still in-stock online, but there’s no telling how long it will be around. The shirt is $35, necklace is $48, and the earrings are $42, which is a small price to pay for spreading the girl power message.
What do you guys think of the collection? I want to hear what your favorite way to spread the girl power message is. Do you wear it on your shirt? Spread the word verbally? Let’s talk about it in the comment section!
